June 4, 2006 “Be careful what you tell God you are willing to do. I can remember the day that I went to enroll in seminary. It was a defining day in my life and ministry. Years ago, as I walked up the path to the seminary’s administration building, I only needed to get two things straight with God. (1) “Lord, I will not do church planting.” (2) “And Lord, no missionary work.” But God has a wonderful sense of humor. To this day, I have participated in three church plants and I have had the precious opportunity to teach pastors in the Philippines. Little did I know that over the course of 26 years, God would create in my heart a love for church planting and for missions.” Elliott Greene So confessed the Rev. R. Elliott Greene as he shared his testimony on June 4, 2006, at the Commissioning Service for Tyrannus Hall Foundation for Pastoral Development. The event was held at Park Cities Presbyterian Church in the Fellowship Hall and it was a joint effort with New St. Peter’s Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Paul Settle did a masterful job serving as the emcee, first introducing the Rev. Rich Lambert, who introduced Elliott and shared the new relationship that NSPPC has with him. Rich said that in order for Elliott to accomplish the goals of Tyrannus Hall, New St. Peter’s has changed his title and charge to assistant pastor/missionary to give him more flexibility to travel and provide seminary training for pastors. Stephen Nielson then blessed those in attendance with his musical gifts. One of the most moving moments was when Elliott expressed his deep appreciation of Paul Settle and Dr. “Bob” Nielson (deceased), who served with him on staff at PCPC, his NSPPC family and his wife and sons. He indicated that his family is thoroughly excited about this grand calling and that God has blessed him with a wonderful wife who has excellent administrative and stewardship skills that will be a great blessing to Tyrannus Hall. He also mentioned his close relationship with the Session and congregation of NSPPC and his dependence on the prayers of God’s people and the support of the Holy Spirit. Elliott recognized Steve Vanderhill, Dean of Westminster Theological Seminary Dallas, and thanked him for the relationship he has with WTS. Elliott will continue to serve at WTS as Professor of Biblical Languages. He recognized key members of the Tyrannus Hall Advisory Council, Bruce Fogerty and George Seay, who are currently focusing on raising financial support, the current board of directors, Bert Ehrmann and Russell Miller, and the Advisory Council, Dr. Ligon Duncan, Dr. Sinclair Ferguson, Rev. Michael Campbell, the Rev. Paul Settle, Rev. Arrvel Wilson and Dr. Skip Ryan. Then he shared his vision for Tyrannus Hall, which is to train primarily minority pastors to shepherd the body of Christ. In addition, Elliott indicated that training for pastors will initially be provided in four cities in the United States (Jackson, MS, Clarksville, TN, Sacramento, CA and Dallas, TX). However, the ministry will embrace opportunities overseas such as but not limited to Japan, the Philippines and Mexico. As a missionary Elliott mentioned the need to raise financial support. He asked the audience to consider sharing some of the resources that God has entrusted to them with Tyrannus Hall and to look at their financial gift as a temporal investment with eternal value. He also thanked them for their presence. After Elliott concluded his comments, the elders of PCPC and NSPPC led by Rev. Settle, gave a wonderful dedicatory prayer and blessed the organization. This is the Great Commission in action and a clear example of the many roles to be filled by the body of Christ. To God be the glory! |
